So each week I am trying to share a free activity which is linked to the week we have reached in the Traed Bach Mwdlyd Curriculum! This week is all about Santes Dwynwen in preparation for the 25th January!

Santes Dwynwen is the Welsh St Valentines and there is a whole pack available in the shop, which outlines the story. However, suffice it to say that there is a lot about love spoons and potions, Fairies and Fae folk!

Have you ever thought about building a potions station in your play area? Adding it into the mud kitchen or having it slightly set aside for more magical happenings? We have a wonderful book which helped us add potion making into our play repertoire.

However, this week we have been fortunate to have a science kit, and snow!!! so what started as a simple science kit volcano soon expanded!

The boys decided they rather like exploding potions and we took a couple of bottles of the ingredients outside and built a SNOWCANO!!

For the exploding potion you will need:

  • Vinegar (dependent on the size of the bottle you use)
  • Bicarbonate of soda (I used a squash bottle and half a tub of bicarb!)
  • a squirt of washing liquid
  • Red food colouring

You will need to have two bottles, in one you plan to bury put the bicarb and washing up liquid, and food colouring and then put your vinegar in the second bottle.

Once outside make your volcano around the first bottle, leaving the bottle open at the top!! We used snow, but you could use mud or sand too!!

Then you can add your vinegar and stand back!

We made a second volcano in the boys’ snowman!! they hollowed out a chunk with sticks and rocks and we pushed in another bottle!
