Oops forgot to hit publish and its a couple of days late, but better late than never! Did you manage to do the Big Garden bird watch? We did, and saw 5 sparrows, 2 great tits, 2 blue tits, 2 coal tits, a nuthatch, 2 robins, a blackbird, a dunnock, a marsh tit, a wagtail and 3 starlings!! all from the comfort of the kitchen window and on the two feeders we have out front. We always find we see more when we have been feeding the birds for a few weeks prior to the birdwatch!

This week’s bird is the Great Tit (so many jokes its hard to contain myself!!)

Although I am starting to wonder if the photo here is actually of the blue tit….

We have a couple that come to visit and they are the most territorial over the feeders, well except for the robins! They will happily chase off the blue tits and coal tits. Sending them scattering back into the dog roses to peck at the hips left on them.

What they eat….

The great tits LOVE the peanut feeder we have out front. In fact I don’t think I have seen them on the seed dispenser at all.

This little bird is an absolute acrobat on the feeders and darts between the dog roses and the feeders, swinging upside down sideways, in fact any which way to peck at the peanuts.

What they sound like…

The Great Tit has a distinctive ‘teacher’ call.

You can have a listen to them here.

What they look like…

The yellow, green and blue striped feathers across its belly and back and its little black and white cap make it a readily recognisable bird. We most definitely saw two on the feeder at the weekend, as the only other bird it seems that one Great Tit will tolerate on the feeders is the other great tit.

This week we have also found some fabulous board games from YWT. Pop over and have a look here

And don’t forget we have a birdwatching pack in the shop with all sorts of activities and ideas for the aspiring young birdwatcher!
