We have two little Coal tits and two little Marsh tits that regularly visit the bird feeders out front! They are remarkably like the blue tits in character. Hanging around in pairs, easily chased off by the bigger great tits and other birds, but never far from the seed feeder. They will zip off to the dog rose by the wall, but zoom straight back into the vacated feeder as soon as they can.

The Coal tits and the Marsh tits are very similar in colouring, in fact the only difference I can see is the coal tits have little white stripes on the back of the black caps, and marsh tits are just black capped and slightly sleeker birds.

What they sound like….

Here is the Marsh Tit song.

Here is the Coal Tit song. Almost an “if-hee” sound.

They sound really different, which surprised me considering how similar they look!

What they eat…

They both like insects, which is great news for gardeners! Both like seeds, hence they have been pictured on the seed feeders not the peanuts!
