The call of the wild is irresistible to many of us, and for the adventurous woman, the outdoors offers a sanctuary of beauty, challenge, and peace.
Whether you’re planning a walk or a weekend camping trip, having the right gear can make all the difference in your comfort, safety, and overall experience.
Here’s a roundup of essential gear every outdoorsy woman should have in her arsenal.
1. Sturdy Footwear
Your feet are your most valuable asset on any outdoor adventure. Invest in a pair of high-quality hiking boots or trail shoes that offer good ankle support, grip, and waterproofing. Likewise good wool socks make a MASSIVE difference too!! One thing wool does is to wick away sweat keeping your feet more comfortable for longer!

2. Comfortable Backpack
A well-fitted backpack is crucial for carrying your gear efficiently and comfortably. Look for a pack with adjustable straps, a supportive hip belt, and plenty of compartments. I am just looking for sustainable materials used in the making of my next backpack as my old day pack is now starting to fall apart!
3. Weather-Appropriate Clothing
Layering is key to staying comfortable in the great outdoors. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Add an insulating layer like a fleece or down jacket for warmth, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer layer. Don’t forget a hat, gloves, and extra socks! I also always advocate for long sleeved tops and long trousers rather than shorts whatever the weather for coverage from the sun but also to protect you from the undergrowth when out exploring!
4. Navigation Tools
Even if you are walking a well-marked trail, it’s essential to have navigation tools on hand. A reliable map and compass are non-negotiable, and a GPS device or smartphone with offline maps can be a great backup. Always know how to use these tools before heading out.
5. Water Carrying
Staying hydrated is vital and in my opinion a sturdy water bottle is just the ticket! We all have our own Chilly’s bottle as they are stocked at a local shop!
6. Portable Shelter
For overnight trips, a lightweight, easy-to-set-up tent is a must. There are now options that are specifically designed for women or solo hikers, providing enough space without unnecessary bulk. A good sleeping bag rated for the expected temperatures and a sleeping pad for insulation and comfort are also essential. In my situation with two small kiddos I don’t get out to solo camp, rather we prefer heading out to our field with our family sized tent!

7. Cooking Gear
A compact, reliable stove and lightweight cookware make meal preparation easy and enjoyable. I love my metal tin pan set which means everything is in one small compact space including cutlery!! Perfect for over a small camp fire!! And a little cook out is always fun!! We LOVE making popcorn in two metal sieves over the fire!!

8. Safety Essentials
Safety should always be a priority. Carry a first aid kit tailored to your needs, we have different kits in all sorts of places! One super duper one for when we are using heavy gardening machinery away from the house, one in the car, one in a day pack for trips a definite must for me!
A multi-tool, and a whistle for emergencies. A headlamp with extra batteries is indispensable for navigating in low light, and a lightweight emergency blanket can provide warmth if you get caught out unexpectedly.
9. Personal Care Items
Biodegradable soap, a quick-dry towel, are always good for a day out in the wild and a small trowel for burying waste can make your outdoor experience more comfortable and environmentally friendly.
Sunscreen and insect repellent are also crucial to protect your skin from the elements and the midges!!
10. Extra Luxuries
Finally, a few extras can make your outdoor experience even more enjoyable.
Marshmallows!!!!
Consider a lightweight hammock for relaxing, a good book, or a journal to document your adventures. A portable USB battery pack or solar panel can keep your electronics powered, and a camera or smartphone is perfect for capturing memories.

Having the right gear is essential for a safe and enjoyable outdoor adventure.
Each item on this list plays a crucial role in ensuring you’re prepared for whatever nature throws your way. So gear up, get out there, and embrace the wild with confidence and enthusiasm!
